This small bulb loyally grows back again each year: a beautiful corolla opens at the top of its stem about 30cm long, between March 15th and 30th, whatever the weather. Daffodils in Le Rivau gardens are an indigenous species. Narcissus pseudonarcissus is their botanical name; they were introduced here about 15 years ago, They sweet simplicity blends perfectly with the parts of the gardens we let grow them more naturally.
Daffodils are very resilient, especially to the random weather typical of early spring: they resist showers as well as droughts. They thrive under the tall chestnut trees, while few other flowers like to grow.
Their withered flowers do not need cutting, since that would prevent their seeds to sow again. Bulbs should also keep their leaves to complete their growth. The only thing we do is spread ripe compost after the bulb has regenerated, and that’s that, really – daffodils, they are gorgeous!
